It's Springtime, Do You Need To Worry About Mice?

If you have had mice living in your attic and within your wall voids for the winter, you can relax because it's almost spring, and spring is when the weather warms up and mice move back outside, right? Well, it may be true that mice will spend more time outside, they aren't likely to find a new place to live. Plus, spring is a time when mice multiply. This can cause mice to be much more noticeable in spring, that is, unless you do something about it.

If you do NOT have signs of mice inside your home, signs such as droppings in the backs of drawers, chew marks on sideboards and furniture, and scratching noises within your walls, there are a number of things that you can do to try to keep mice from invading your space. And if you are thorough, it is possible to keep them out.

Mice Exclusion Tips:

• Do not give mice a food source. Clean, clean, clean. Thoroughly vacuum all areas of your home, especially areas where food particles might be present. Also, clean your kitchen and pantry areas, paying special attention to places where food tends to accumulate, such as under the toaster, between the stove and counter, and underneath the refrigerator. Store all food items in the refrigerator or in sealable containers. And only put pet food down at mealtimes.
• Do not give mice a water source. Repair any leaky pipes, sinks, tubs and toilets. Make sure there are no areas of standing water around your home.
• Do not give mice a way into your home. Trim back trees and other vegetation from your home, so mice cannot use them as bridges. Inspect the outside of your foundation, walls, and roof area. If you find any gaps, cracks, or holes, seal them up. This can be done using a caulking gun, in many cases. Also, make sure all your screens and door sweeps are in good repair.

If you DO have mice, or you are not sure if you do or not, it is vital that you find out. Mice are not just a nuisance pest. They come with all sorts of potential hazards, to your family's health, your possessions, and to your home's structural integrity. Not only do they carry a number of diseases that they can transfer to humans, they can damage or destroy items in your home with their constant chewing, and they have been known to chew on wires, which is a fire hazard.
