Dispelling Fumigation Myths
December 15, 2017
Have you heard that fumigation is a powerful way to rid your home or business of pests, but found yourself steering away from it because of something someone said? It happens all the time. There are many myths about fumigation that lead people to chose another, less effective solution for their pest problems. We're going to look at three things you might have heard about fumigation, and correct these myths so you have all the facts.
Gases Used In Fumigation Are Dangerous Because They're Odorless
While it is true that the active ingredients in a fumigation can be odorless, a fumigation is not odorless. Professionals use chloropicrin (tear gas) to reduce the risk of accidental exposure to harmful agents in a fumigation. If a human or animal enters an area being fumigated, they aren't going to stay long.
It is also important to understand that when structures are tented for fumigation, they are clearly marked and sealed from entry. No creatures are allowed to go in once the fumigation has started.
Fumigation Is Like A Fogger
Some people decide to get a fogger or some kind of sprayed pesticide instead of going with a fumigation because they think a fumigation is nothing more than a big fogger. But fumigants are not sprays. They are not shot into the air, and they don't settle on things. They are gases that penetrate deep into the pores and holes of a structure. That's why they are able to arrest termite infestations. And, since they aren't sprayed pesticides, there is no residue left after a fumigation.
Some people decide not to go with a fumigation because they have a small or isolated infestation and they don't want to have their entire structure tented. But fumigations are not always large. This is a pest control option that can be used for a single piece of furniture. In fact, we've treated many items on a smaller scale. All that is needed is a small tented chamber to put these items in.
