What Can I Do About These Mosquitoes?

We can all agree that mosquitoes in Louisville are beyond annoying. They ruin picnics, parties, weddings, and any type of summer outdoor fun in the Louisville area with their incessant buzzing and itchy bites. If mosquitoes were only annoying, we would not have to worry too much about them. However, mosquitoes can be dangerous too. They carry diseases that can make humans very sick and sometimes even cause death. Some people take preventative measures with citronella candles, bug sprays, and home remedies, but they are often ineffective. Mosquito control could be your answer to a pest-free summer!

There are many diseases that are transmitted by the bite of the mosquito. Zika virus, once only in certain parts of the world, has now made its way to North America. This virus is dangerous to pregnant women as it can cause a brain condition called microcephaly in unborn babies. Malaria is transmitted when mosquitoes feed on a person. It can cause flu-like symptoms like fever, body aches, chills, and more. If left untreated it can cause death. West Nile virus can be transmitted when a mosquito feeds on an infected bird and then bites a human. This virus can cause damage to the brain and central nervous system. It is beneficial to prevent bites all together to help avoid becoming infected.

As a Louisville homeowner, there are several things you can do to prevent mosquitoes from being attracted to your yard.

  • Remove standing water. Dump out kiddie pools as soon as you are done with them. Empty pails and buckets, watering cans, and any little thing that holds water. Make sure your faucets and hoses aren’t dripping and causing wet areas around your home.  Mosquitoes love water and that’s where they will breed.
  • Clean up yard debris. Old rotted leaves, stumps, and wet grass clippings have the same effect as standing water and attract mosquitoes.
  • Don’t over-water. Only use lawn sprinklers when necessary and don’t water plants and gardens to the point of saturation. Again, any puddling, dampness, and standing water will attract mosquitoes – even in your beautiful gardens.
  • Plant mosquito repelling plants. Mosquitoes don’t like lavender, lemongrass, or citronella. Planting these types of plants around your yard and seating areas can naturally help keep mosquitoes away.

When home remedies just don’t work to rid your Louisville yard of mosquitoes, the professionals at Action Pest Control can help. They will come out and review preventative measures with you. Then they will treat the areas of your yard where mosquitoes are likely to breed, most often the perimeter, around gardens, near pools, and near brush and overgrowth, and the transition from the yard to surrounding wooded areas. Professional pest control experts can provide seasonal mosquito treatments or one-time treatments that are great for events like family reunions, BBQ's and weddings.
