What is something you have invested in to improve your quality of sleep? Have you purchased a new bed within the past year? Maybe you recently picked up a fluffier or a firmer pillow. Many people pay good money to make sure their rest is as good as it can be. One way you can ensure you are having better sleep is to keep bed bugs out of your home. The question is, how would you know if these pests are around? Here is how to check for bed bugs inside your Indianapolis home and some tips and tricks to avoid these pests.

What Do Bed Bugs Look Like?

Something we are regularly asked is, what do bed bugs look like? The reason this question is so common is that bed bugs are tricky to spot. Now, they are not invisible, they are just really great at hiding. If you ever have the unfortunate privilege of seeing a bed bug for yourself, identify it by its reddish-brown, apple-seed-sized, shield-shaped body. You might find one of these pests on your bed at night, crawling in or out of a crack or crevice inside your home, or on a piece of clothing, furniture, or other item.

What Signs Do Bed Bugs Leave Behind?

By the time you are regularly seeing bed bugs inside your Indianapolis home, your infestation will have already grown out of control. To identify these pests earlier, here are some signs to look out for.

  • Bloodstains
  • Fecal droppings
  • Eggs
  • Shed skins
  • A musty odor
  • Bites

How To Find Bed Bugs

Step One

Take all of the sheets and covers off of your bed. Check them for bloodstains, fecal droppings, and live bed bugs.

Step Two

Lift up your mattress and box spring one at a time and check them for fecal droppings, shed skins, and eggs. Make sure to pull back seams and look deep into cracks and crevices, using a flashlight.

Step Three

Check around outlets, baseboards, bed frames, and other areas around your home for hiding bed bugs, fecal droppings, shed skins, and eggs.

Step Four

Check your skin for bed bug bites. Identify bites from these pests by the way they run in a straight line or zig-zag pattern. One thing to note with this is that not everyone reacts the same to bites. Some people have no visible or physical symptoms at all.

Step Five

Inspect your clothing, furniture, and other items around your home for hiding bed bugs, fecal droppings, eggs, shed skins, and bloodstains.

Bonus Tip

If you are traveling and checking a room for bed bugs, leave your luggage in the car or store it in the bathroom where bed bugs are least likely to be. This will help you avoid picking up these pests while making sure your living areas are not infested.
