Cockroaches are horrible pests. They are dirty, they can cause disease, and they are very hard to get rid of. They can live in arctic temperatures or tropical climates. There are many species of cockroaches in Lexington, there are three main types you need to worry about: American, German, and Oriental cockroaches.

Types Of Cockroaches

These three types of cockroach have flat bodies and are protected by an exoskeleton. They have wings, but most species do not fly. They are attracted to food, which for them often means trash, decay, and fecal matter.

American Cockroaches

American cockroaches are the largest species. They don’t really fly, but they sometimes use their wings to glide. The average length is 4cm. They are a reddish-brown color and extremely fast despite their large size. Like most cockroaches, American cockroaches are nocturnal. They dislike light, so you are most likely to see them around your house if you turn a light on at night.

German Cockroaches

German cockroaches are the smallest of these three species. They usually only grow to just over 1cm. Like American cockroaches, they may glide on occasion, but they don’t use their wings to fly. They are dark in color, ranging from brown to black. They are also nocturnal and have less resistance to cold than other types of cockroach. German cockroaches sometimes emit a bad odor when threatened.

Oriental Cockroaches

Oriental cockroaches are a larger species. Males grow to 2.5cm while females can grow larger than 3cm. This species is also unable to fly. Oriental cockroaches are much darker. They are usually a shiny black, but sometimes have red undertones and might be a dark brown instead of black. These cockroaches love moisture, so you’re most likely to find them in damp areas such as bathrooms and laundry rooms.

The Problem With Cockroaches

Most people find cockroaches frightening and disgusting, and for good reason. Cockroaches are attracted to filth and because they spend so much time in decaying materials and trash, they can carry nearly 30 different kinds of bacteria. They also carry pathogens for disease and can cause allergic reactions in some people. Cockroaches can also exacerbate asthma, especially in kids.
