Stopping A Carpet Beetle Infestation In Louisville Before It Starts

The worst time to contact Louisville pest control is after carpet beetles have been discovered inside your home. Why? This is not commonly known, but seeing carpet beetles is a sign that these insects have had a long time to damage your property. Let's take a look at why this is the case and examine a few important facts that every Louisville resident should know about carpet beetles.

Signs Of A Carpet Beetle Infestation

The first, and the most noticeable, sign of a carpet beetle infestation is the presence of several carpet beetles in your home. Adult carpet beetles don't damage your property. They eat nectar and other sweet sources of food found in nature. If you're seeing several of them, it is likely due to an indoor infestation. Here's how it works.

  • One carpet beetle zips in through an open door or crawls through a gap in your exterior.
  • The beetle lays its eggs inside your home.
  • Larvae hatch from their eggs and begin feeding.
  • The feeding process may damage items in your home as these pests can eat natural fibers found in man-made items.
  • When they develop into pupae and emerge as adults, you'll start to see beetles in your home.

Varied carpet beetles can spend as many as 630 days in their larval stage. While in this stage, they can cause damage to your stuff. Therefore, seeing lots of beetles in your home is an indication that these pests have had months (or even more than a year) to cause damage in hidden places.

What Does A Carpet Beetle Look Like?

An adult carpet beetle isn't much to look at. Adults are only 1/16 of an inch long, which is not much more than a speck. You will have to take a close look to tell that you're looking at a carpet beetle. If you're able to do so, you'll notice that varied carpet beetles are a mottled coloration of black, brown, orange, and white. If you have black carpet beetles (Anthrenus flavipes) they'll be entirely black.

How To Tell If There Are Carpet Beetle Larvae In Your Home

When one tiny carpet beetle gets into your home, you may not notice it. For this reason, it is important to be able to locate and identify carpet beetle larvae in your home. In the larval stage, carpet beetles are grubs. These grubs are hairy and worm-like. They're also larger than the adult carpet beetles.

You may find carpet beetle larvae in your bed, clothing drawers, closets, storage areas, or attic. Inspect items that have natural fibers. If you see worm-like critters attached, you've found your carpet beetle infestation. You may also detect carpet beetle larvae when you find carpet beetle larvae shells in your furniture and in other key locations.

Tips & Tricks To Total Carpet Beetle Removal

If you already have a carpet beetle infestation, there are a few ways you can work to get rid of them and protect your belongings. It is a systematic process and it requires a lot of effort.

  • Wash or dry clean all stored clothing items and return them to storage inside plastic totes or sealed plastic bags.
  • If you notice carpet beetles in your pantry or kitchen, store foods that come in cardboard, paper, or thin plastic inside sealed plastic or glass containers. Carpet beetles can be pantry pests.
  • If you notice evidence of carpet beetles in a rug, you may be able to address your infestation by steam cleaning your rug. Heat kills carpet beetles in all stages of development.
  • Prevent carpet beetles from continuing to get into your home by keeping doors shut, replacing exterior white lights with yellow lights, sealing potential entry points in your exterior, and addressing flowering weeds around your home.
