Guide To Preventing House Spiders

In Lexington, there are several species of spider that accidentally get into our homes. But, today, we're going to be talking about the spiders that come in on purpose--the arachnids that actually like living with us. Here's what you need to know.

There are several species of spider that are considered house spiders. The most common is Achaearanea tepidariorum, which is the species of spider that will create webs in all the corners of your home to catch flies. While these spiders can bite, their bites are not considered medically important.

There is one spider that is considered a house spider that can be dangerous to have around. It is called the brown recluse. While not all bites from brown recluse spiders lead to disfiguring wounds, the potential is there. Their venom is known to have necrotic properties. So these spiders should always be dealt with quickly when they appear in a home.

Spider Prevention Tips

All spiders eat bugs. Therefore, preventing bugs in or around your home will help to reduce and resist all spiders.

Here are some ways you can prevent spiders:

  • Professional pest service . There is no better way to manage bugs and other pests than to have a trained and experienced pest professional routinely inspect your property for pest pressures and apply routine treatments to keep pests out of your home.
  • Reduce harborage options . Spiders can thrive near your home if they have locations to hide in. If you have wood piles, construction materials, kids' toys, leaf litter, brush, or other objects spiders can hide in that are near to your walls, you'll increase the likelihood of having spiders come into your home.
  • Reduce exterior white lights . Spiders eat flies and flies are attracted to white light. Consider replacing white lights with yellow insect-resistant bulbs, or simply keep lights off at night.
  • Seal cracks . If spiders explore your walls, give them fewer entry points to exploit. Use a caulking gun to seal holes, gaps, cracks, and other openings. Cover vents with a screen. And make sure all of your other screens are in good working condition.
  • Check weather stripping . Make sure all door sweeps and weather stripping are in good working order. If none exist, consider installing them.
