Steps To Take Now To Prevent Mosquitoes Around Your Louisville Home This Summer

We know what you are probably thinking. Isn’t it too early to worry about mosquitoes? Well, like most things, that depends on how serious a problem you consider them to be.

For most people, mosquitoes are no more than a nuisance. For those who have done their research, they know how threatening mosquitoes can be. Although it is true that here in the United States that threat is much lower than in other countries, there have still been known cases of West Nile, malaria, yellow fever, chikungunya, and even the Zika virus, especially around cities or towns in close proximity to airports. The more you research, the more you begin to come to the conclusion that maybe it is a good idea to start working towards a mosquito-free summer.

 A Mosquito Free Summer

Before we start discussing mosquito prevention methods, we should mention that no matter how many of the following steps you take, it is nearly impossible to achieve a 100% mosquito-free summer. This does not mean we are not going to try our best to get you as close as you can be.

  • Let's consider where mosquitos reproduce. Most commonly, mosquitoes reproduce in stagnant water. Reducing these sources around your property is a great first step in lowering mosquito population heading into summer.
  • Examine your home's lines of defense. If you have a porch or area that overlooks the outdoors, consider installing outdoor fans. Mosquitos are terrible flyers and will have a hard time landing and biting you with even a gentle breeze.
  • Take a look at your window and door screens and make sure they are in good repair.
  • As spring turns into summer, try to remain aware of how often you leave non-screened doors and windows open, as most often this is how mosquitoes get inside.
