Bigger is not always better. When it comes to dealing with pest threats, warehouses have a lot more to worry about--for no other reason than the scale of their business. A large structure can hold more food, more liquids, more wood pallets (which are food for termites), and more areas of harborage. Three of these can be linked to the need for fumigation. Let's take a look.
Food
Pests can be a serious threat to food items. Ideally, food pests are sealed out of a warehouse building through the use of Integrated Pest Management methods and a targeted application of pesticides to the exterior of the structure. But, when food pests are brought into a facility, it may be necessary to turn to fumigation as a solution. Fumigation can be used to directly treat many commodities directly. This can be done on a small or large scale, depending on the infestation. And, when performed correctly, the products being treated can be saved.
Liquids
Most of the time, beverages are in sealed containers, which pests can't get into. But a source of liquid that is exposed to the air can create a challenge when applying interior pesticide treatments, including fumigation. So, in this case, a fumigation is not the ideal solution. But, most of the time, open liquids can be removed before a fumigation begins, and so do not pose much of an obstacle.
Wood
When termites, carpenter ants, or other wood-destroying pests find their way into a warehouse, it can be complicated to do targeted treatments to arrest the issue. This is where fumigation shines. Fumigants can get in where termites are hiding and feeding, and exterminate them without harming stored products.
Harborage
There are a lot of nooks and crannies for pests to hide in a warehouse. These hiding places can be difficult to get into with sprayed pesticides. A fumigation is not like applying a fogger or sprayed pesticides. Fumigants don't land or settle like dust; they penetrate--even into shrink-wrapped products. If you need to get at pests hiding in the gaps and cracks of a pallet stacked with bags of food, fumigation can get the job done. It can be applied to a single pallet or an entire section of a warehouse. And, after the fumigation is complete, there is no residue left behind.
