Bed Bug Awareness Week

If you live here in Terre Haute, then you already know that bed bugs do too! You have heard the stories. You may know someone who has dealt with bed bugs in your neighborhood, at your workplace, or in the local school. You may even have had to deal with them yourself! But one thing that many simply do not understand is how this could have possibly happened to them. After all, you are a diligent cleaner. Your home is spotless! I mean, all your friends say that you could eat off the floors! How could bed bugs have possibly come into your home?

This question is perhaps the most common question that people ask in regards to a bed bug infestation, but it truly is a lack of understanding that would lead to a question such as this. You see, bed bugs do not infest a home or a business because it is dirty, unkempt, or cluttered. In fact, bed bugs do not care about the level of cleanliness in a building at all! What they are actually looking for are humans. They will infest any place that offers them their favorite meal – human blood! And this is not the only misconception regarding bed bugs that is out there!

Aside from the fact that bed bugs do not infest homes and businesses due to squalor conditions, another common misconception is that bed bugs only live in beds. Perhaps this thought comes from our Grandparents who would always say as they tucked us into bed, “goodnight, don’t let the bed bugs bite”! But, it really isn’t all their fault. Bed bugs are, perhaps, most commonly discovered in beds which lead to the false assumption that this is where they live. The truth is that most of us spend close to 8 hours a day in our beds – unconscious. We are barely aware of the snoring next to us or the dog pacing back and forth in the hallway, let alone a tiny, little insect taking a small bite from our waist or back. These opportunistic little pests have come to understand that the best chance of snagging a meal is by hanging out in your bedroom. But since bed bugs can go up several months without feeding, they can hide away and reproduce just about anywhere in your home – even inside the electrical components in your television, game system, or computer!

So what, exactly, is the best approach to get the real word out about bed bugs? Well, as the public outreach division of the National Pest Management Association, the National Pest Management Alliance has a solution. They have named the week of June 4-10, 2017, as “Bed Bug Awareness Week”!
