ground cricket

Adult ground crickets are a small species of cricket with adults growing to ½ of an inch or less in length. Adults are winged and are dark brownish-red; their thorax is covered in bristles.

Biology and Behavior

ground cricket

  • Male ground crickets use their wings to create a shrill, high-pitched chirping sound.

  • Ground crickets scavenge for plants and other insects to feed on. They do not cause enough damage to plants to be considered a garden pest.

  • They can be found living underneath mulch, rocks, woodpiles, and other objects that provide a damp, dark environment.

  • Inside homes, ground crickets will seek shelter in damp, dark areas like basements, under sinks, in crawl spaces, and other like areas.

  • Ground crickets are attracted to lights and can be seen on sidewalks or pavement under street lights or gathered on decks and porches attracted to outdoor lighting.

  • These crickets are typically found living outdoors, but may enter buildings in large numbers to seek warmth or if they are attracted by lights.

  • Inside homes, ground crickets may cause damage to fabrics, paper, and other personal belongings.

Ground Cricket Prevention Tips

  • Seal cracks and crevices found in your home’s foundation or exterior walls.

  • Install door sweeps underneath all exterior doors.

  • Make sure that vents are secure and have tight-fitting covers.

  • Place woodpiles a distance away from the exterior of your home.

  • Keep clutter to a minimum inside your home so that an infestation can be easily found and eliminated.
