Tips For Treating Painful Stings

Over a half million people are sent to emergency rooms each year because of stinging insects. There are many insects capable of stinging throughout Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois, but most often they are inflicted by social wasps and hornets. These insects live in groups and build nests of all sizes. And, when wasps and hornets feel threatened or their nests are disturbed, they often respond by stinging repeatedly. Here are a few tips that may come in handy if you have been stung by an insect…
Remove the Stinger:
- It’s important to use a scraping motion or tweezers to remove a stinger. Do not squeeze as this can inject more venom.
Control Swelling:
- Ice the area as soon as possible.
- Elevate the area if possible.
- Remove any tight fitting jewelry. In the case of swelling, it may be difficult to remove later.
Treat Symptoms:
- Acetaminophen, ibuprofen or other over-the-counter pain reliever may provide relief from the pain.
- An antihistamine may be taken for itchiness or apply a mix of baking soda and water to the affected area. Calamine lotion is another option.
Seek medical attention immediately if sting victim has:
- Trouble breathing
- Feelings of Faintness or dizziness
- Hives
- A swollen tongue
- A history of severe allergy reaction to insect stings.
