September 22, 2007Technical Tips: Getting Ahead of Head Lice
Now that school is back in session, it is important for parents - and kids - to understand that head lice are more common than one might think. Head lice are highly contagious and very annoying; however, they are not dangerous. Here are some tips on how you can get ahead of head lice:

1. Working in a well-lit area, remove tangles and divide hair in to sections.
2. Using a nit comb, thoroughly inspect each section beginning at the scalp to detect the presence of lice or nits.
3. To remove debris between strokes, dip comb in water and wipe clean with paper towel.
4. Re-inspect the same section for any attached nits and live lice.
5. If you choose to purchase an over-the-counter treatment, follow instructions carefully.
6. Vacuum upholstered furniture, rugs, stuffed animals, and car seats to remove lice or nits attached to fallen hairs. Wash bedding and recently worn clothing in hot water.
7. Boil nit comb in hot water before reusing.
8. Inspect infested person every day for at least one week following removal.
