July 31, 2007 – Technical Tips: Properly Removing Ticks
Summertime is here again...and so are the ticks! It isn't uncommon for ticks to be found on adults, children, or pets after romping through the woods or tall grass. Here are some tips on how to properly remove a tick.
You will need: tweezers, tissue, small container, and antiseptic
With the tweezers, gently grab the tick from the side as closely to the skin as possible. Pull the tick straight out—don't squeeze! Inspect the bite carefully to be sure all parts of the tick have been removed. Be wary of rashes, fevers, chills, headache, fatigue, or swollen glands for the next one to two weeks. Mention the bite to your physician if any symptoms are persistent.
Always try to remove ticks within 48 hours. Promptly removing ticks greatly reduces chances of exposure to potential illness.
