“Bed Bugs Found in (Your Business Name Here)”

Every week it seems there is a news story about Bed Bugs being discovered in yet another local community. How would your business be affected if the headline included your business name and the words “infested with bed bugs”?
We are seeing more calls every day and our heat treatment truck is booked out several weeks. We have treated hotels, motels, dorm rooms and affluent homes. This month we even went to the Nashville TN area and tented a home and fumigated to eradicate a bed bug infestation.
So what is our government doing? Several bills supported by my colleagues at the National Pest Management Association are currently in the pipeline in Washington DC. We are trying to get the CDC to recognize bed bugs as a public health pest so that monies are available to health departments for education and enforcement. As of now the health departments have no money to provide services related to bed bugs. That leaves a lot of people to fend for themselves.
What’s the ultimate solution? Unfortunately like a lot of things it is going to get much worse before it gets better. Bed bugs are resistant to the effects of most all of the products available to kill them. Heat treatments and fumigation seem to be the only sure fire method of control. Don’t look for the conversation about bed bugs to die down anytime soon.
