Are Mice On Your Thanksgiving Invite List?

Thanksgiving is a time for succulent turkey, potatoes, gravy, and cranberry sauce. It is a time for pies of every imaginable flavor. It is a time to gather together with the people in your life you are closest to, and a time to give thanks. It isn't a time to be dealing with rodent pests. When you make out your thanksgiving invitations this year, we don't imagine mice will be on your invite list; but if you're not careful, you may invite them anyway. Here a few of the ways we can invite mice to come into our homes, and make themselves at home, this Thanksgiving season.

Mice are drawn in by smells, but not necessarily the smells you might expect. To a house mouse, the smell of trash is just as savory as the smell of pie. If your external trash cans are not properly sealed, you could invite mice in near the walls of your home; and if they are near your walls, there is a good chance they will find a way in. A mouse can squeeze through a hole the size of a dime; and if there is no hole, it is equipped with teeth that can easily make one.

We aren't the only ones who love appetizers. Mice love them too. If you have a bird feeder, you could be laying out a banquet of pre-meal treats. Before Thanksgiving arrives it might be the time to take those feeders in or be more diligent about picking up those seeds.

Does your yard have a punch bowl? Just as a punch bowl is the centerpiece of a Thanksgiving celebration, a bird bath or puddle is the centerpiece for mice. These little critters need something to drink to wash down that food. If you have toys or clutter that collect water, consider putting those things inside. If you have areas where water collects after it rains, consider filling those areas in. If your gutters are obstructed or broken, get them fixed so that water is channeled away from your home.

Do your exterior walls have any holes? If they do, you're saying to those mice, "Come on in!" This is the time of year when you should be finding gaps and cracks in your exterior walls and filling them in. A caulking gun is good for a quick fix until you are able to get those spots properly fixed.

This is the time of year for giving thanks and sharing food with the ones you love; but, unfortunately, it is also the time of year when mice get into homes to hide from the cold.
